At the end of this unit on wetlands, we will take a field trip to Lettuce Lake Park in Temple Terrace.
Students will be taking a 60 minute hiking tour through the park.
To prepare for this physical exercise we are reviewing hiking safety rules:
Stretching
Water
Pacing
Dress
Skin care
Stretching It is very important to stretch before we begin the hike. This activity will help keep our muscles from cramping during the hike.
Water You will need to bring 1 pint of water for every hour we will be out on the trail. Staying hydrated is important, if not you could get sick.
Pacing Do not run or walk a fast pace on the trail. 60 minutes is a long time to walk without a break. If you get tired, let the teacher know.
Dress It is very hot in Florida in April. Wear cool and comfortable clothes and a good pair of tennis shoes or hiking shoes.
Skin care It is very important to wear sunscreen when you are hiking. You need at least a 30 proof sun block. No matter what shade your skin is you will burn!
Standards:
PE.4.C.1.2: Understand the importance of safety in all physical activities, especially those that are high risk.
PE.4.C.1.4: Understand the importance of protecting parts of the body from the harmful rays of the sun.
PE.4.L.2.9: Recognize that specific stretches increase flexibility and reduce the chance of injury.
